How do I use an X-Rite digital swatchbook in EasySIGN?

I have an X-Rite digital swatchbook, that I want to use for calibrating in EasySIGN, but it doesn't work. I can get the X-Rite to do the white calibration correctly, but when I get to the list of patches to measure, EasySIGN doesn't respond.

After using the X-Rite digital swatchbook with other commercially available software, the swatchbook no longer works correctly with EasySIGN, because the other software stores its settings in the non-volatile memory of the device! The digital swatchbook needs a hard-reset for it to work correctly afterwards. How to do this is described below.

X-Rite digital swatchbook hard-reset
There seems to be some calibration software on the market that re-programs the X-Rite digital swatchbook to such a degree that it will no longer work with EasySIGN. This software stores its own settings permanently in the digital swatchbook, and the device can no longer be used by EasySIGN or any other calibration software except this sofware itself. If you experience this problem, the Digital swatchbook needs a hard-reset before it can be used again. More information can be found on the X-Rite web-site, please click the following link: http://www.xrite.com/HelpDesk/ShowPage.asp?FAQNr=141&RecType=4&id=90

1 You have used other calibration software than EasySIGN32. A brand new Digital swatchbook will work perfectly with any version of EasySIGN32, and will continue to do so.
2 You have EasySIGN version 2.0.0.4 or earlier, because 2.0.0.5 automatically hard-resets the digital swatchbook
3 The detection of the Swatchbook works, and the white calibration also works, but measuring of patches does not work. If the swatchbook is not detected at all, you have a different problem, and resetting it will not solve this.

First, start up the software called HyperTerminal, which is supplied with Windows. Click "Start", "Program", "Accessories", "HyperTerminal", and double-click Hyperterm.exe.

This HyperTerminal software can be installed by choice. If you do not have it, open Control Panel, double-click "Software" and click "Windows Setup". Then double-click "Communication" and make sure "HyperTerminal" is checked. The click OK, and windows will ask you for the Windows CD and HyperTerminal will be installed.

Once HyperTerminal starts up, you might get an error message than no modem is installed. Simply ignore this, because a connection to the swatchbook will be opened directly to COM1 or COM2. Then you will be prompted for a name for the connection. Simply type any name here.

The next dialog will ask you for a port. You can choose between "Directly to COM1" or "Directly to COM2". Choose the port that your Swatchbook is connected to.

The next dialog lets you choose the connection speed and parameters. Set the baudrate to 9600, databits to 8, parity to "None", stopbits to 1 and Flow control to None, then click OK

Next, a white edit field with a blinking cursor will appear. Now type the following command

SCRI

and press enter. While typing, you will not see anything! This is normal, just type the command and press enter. After two or three second, the Swatchbook will respond with

<00>

And you are done! The swatchbook will now work correctly with EasySIGN32. If the Swatchbook returns <01> or any other response, you have made a typing mistake, please try again until <00> is returned.

Does EasySIGN support file locking?

New file locking mechanism since EasySIGN 4.5

Starting with the 4.5.0.0 exe, EasySIGN offers a new file locking mechanism.

In previous EasySIGN versions, there was no file locking at all. A file could be opened on two computers at the same time and both users could write their changes back to disk. Just imagine what could happen to your worksheets.

We decided to add a locking mechanism in the 4.0.0.2 exe (SP4.2). Once a file had been opened on one computer, it could no longer be opened on another computer.

This protection turned out to be very annoying in a production environment. Once a file had been opened for production purposes, it could no longer be opened in the office.

This resulted in a new protection system that offered the possibility to open a read-only copy of a file. Once a file has been locked on a another computer, the second (or n-th) user that opens the file receives the following message:

By pressing the ‘Yes’ button, EasySIGN opens a read-only copy of the locked file. You can easily identify a read-only file by checking the caption of the EasySIGN window:

A file that has been opened Read-only can only be saved under another name. Closing the file on the computer that locked the file makes no difference. This behavior prevents any modification from being undone by the ‘read-only’ user.

Missing OLEACC.DLL

If you encounter this problem, you must be running Window98 or WindowsNT4.

It can be solved by one of the options below:

1
Win98 and WinNT4

Place your cd-rom, browse to "Program\3rdparty\OLEACC.DLL" and run SETUP.EXE. If you can't find the folder, download "Microsoft Active Accessibility 2.0 Redistributable" from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b14f6e1-888a-4f1d-b1a1-da08ee4077df&DisplayLang=en

2
Win98

Goto "Start, Settings, Control Panel". Open "Add/remove programs", goto "Windows setup" and add the "Accessibility" option.

3
WinNT4

Download and install SP6a.

How do I migrate a 16-bit Archive on an old computer to a 32-bit Archive on a new computer?

1 Locate the Archive on the old computer.

If it's installed in "C:\EasySIGN\Archive", create the same directory structure on the new pc and copy all the files to this location on the new pc.

Make sure that all .ESW-files and a recent "customer.dta" have been copied to the new location.

If you know what you're doing, you might copy the files to another location, but this location has to be entered into EASYSIGN.INI after copying it in step 2. Change the "ArchiveDir" setting in EASYSIGN.INI on the new computer.

2

Copy EasySIGN.INI from the old to the new computer. The destination is the Windows folder on the new computer.

3

On the new computer, shutdown Archive, start regedit.exe and remove the "NetworkMode" and the "ArchiveFolder" setting.

The first can be found in: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Numerical Control Design\EasySIGN PV004\Archive32" ,

the second in: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Numerical Control Design\EasySIGN PV004\Archive32\Paths".

4 On the new computer, re-run the setup.

The existence of the EASYSIGN.INI file will trigger a DBase conversion routine the next time Archive is launched.

5

Start Archive. If all went well, the DBase will be converted and all .ESW files will be present in the Archive.

6

Optionally, start "Extra, Worksheet conversion 16->23 bits" to convert the .ESW files into .ES files.

How can I move the Archive Folder from one disk to another?

Close Archive, run the Windows Explorer and move the entire Archive folder to the new destination. Restart Archive and when asked, Browse to the new location. The folder links in the DBase will be updated automatically.
